Fire & Iron Region 6 Rally 2011

Wow!  What a long weekend this was.  We had our Fire & Iron Region 6 Rally this past weekend.  The party went from Thursday night through Sunday afternoon.  Even though the party is over I will be feeling it for days to come.  I have a photo gallery at the end of the post.  It is SFW and PG-13 so do not be too worried. Another awesome camping trip up in the White Mountains.  We had to cut the trip short by a day because of hurricane Irene, but it was a great trip.  The State decided on Friday to close all the camp grounds so everyone had to be out by noon on Saturday.

bash, one of the most popular shells available to the *nix community.  Bash has a great deal of built in functions that allow you to accomplish a vast amount of automation.  I am only going to show a very specific example here for processing a group of files.

Using Join for Suppression

We usually use join to find the intersection between two different tables.  For example, if you want all of the orders from the order table who belong to a certain set of customers from the customer table.

This is the most common usage of a join, specifically an inner join.  The results only include the entries that match up from each table.  There are many other situations that you can incorporate a JOIN to solve.  Particularly here we are going to talk about using a JOIN to suppress information from one table by using another. The Power of PIVOT
